E.ON – digital adoption for 72,000 employees
Implementation of a company-wide process and technology platform
By focusing on sustainable growth areas, and following its 2020 takeover of innogy, E.ON is looking to be a key player in driving the transformation to climate-neutral energy supplies in Germany and Europe.
The Group is relying on a comprehensive digitalization strategy to achieve this goal. Its energy grids, to which around 900,000 renewable energy plants and charging stations for electric cars are connected, are one part of this strategy, but E.ON is also working hard on rolling out a Group-wide process and technology platform based on SAP S/4HANA.
Acceptance and confident use of SAP S/4HANA
The question of how best to prepare staff for the extensive changes initially had E.ON’s HR project team scratching their heads. “The time and resources required to provide separate training courses for 72,000 employees in 12 countries would blow any budget,” says Marisa Braun-Besser, Project Manager for Communications and Training. The gradual roll-out would, she adds, also result in a very long period between training and the actual go-live.
It therefore quickly became evident that the Group needs to establish a new kind of knowledge transfer to support the dynamic transformation at E.ON as efficiently as possible. “In view of the different go-live dates, it soon became clear that what we need is a digital adoption solution that can be utilized across applications and also enables users to acquire the necessary know-how about how to operate the software, the processes involved and compliance – independently in the workplace at any time,” explains Alissa Sperlich, HR Technology Product Owner.
Following extensive research into what the market had to offer, E.ON opted for the tts performance suite because it meets all the company’s key requirements. It supports all Group languages and, besides specific application know-how, also offers process assistance in the form of business guidance. What’s more, the solution enables flexible localization of learning content. With numerous different usage scenarios depending on the country and the various business applications in use at its 500 plus companies, this feature was particularly important to E.ON.
The tts performance suite gives us clear added value, as learning content is easy to create and modify. This flexibility perfectly meets the truly diverse requirements of E.ON’s international companies and employees.
Quick and easy creation of tailored learning content
To optimize the support they offer the Group’s companies, E.ON authors create both general learning content for Group-wide knowledge management and highly specific learning content that is only published for certain business units and countries. Ready-made templates that can be customized using a wide range of colors and logos ensure uniform structuring of the available content.
For quick and easy production of the learning content, the tts performance suite offers a recording function that can be used to develop various digital training formats – from step-by-step guides, PDFs, PowerPoint files and documentation to high-quality eLearning solutions. Authors who wish to delve a little deeper and produce sophisticated non-IT learning options, for example, can acquire the necessary skills in the webinars and online tutorials offered by the tts University.
Once content has been published, staff can use QuickAccess to call it up from their digital workplace or in the LMS. This includes standard content that E.ON also uses for training purposes, such as tts Microsoft 365 Empowerment.
Subsequent changes to an application or process are no problem either. All learning content can be adapted with minimal effort – partly because all training documentation is centralized and E.ON has implemented efficient coordination routines between the individual parts of the project.
High user acceptance and Group-wide knowledge sharing
With the help of the tts performance suite, E.ON has taken a relatively short time to create a broad-based, multilayer knowledge platform that maps the training requirements of users ever more effectively at each new development stage. It supports the 72,000 employees in their day-to-day work with various SAP and Microsoft applications, on the intranet or in the HR portal, and either via the cloud or on premises.
Besides a reduced training outlay, the energy Group is thus also ensuring a high level of user acceptance, because staff no longer need to learn in advance but can wait until the moment of need to access exactly the help they require with applications, processes and guidelines or during onboarding. “The tts performance suite gives us clear added value, as learning content is easy to create and modify. This flexibility perfectly meets the truly diverse requirements of E.ON’s international companies and employees,” sums up Annett Irmer, Head of HR Technology.
What E.ON has achieved with the tts performance suite
- Broad acceptance for digital transformation, combined with a reduced training outlay
- A Group-wide single source of truth for around 72,000 members of staff
- Support across applications at all companies with single sign-on
- Reliable applications and processes, thanks to performance support and business guidance in the moment of need
- Localization of learning content to ensure tailored support for countries and companies
- Ability also to use the tts performance suite for subsequent projects in other areas of the company – to date SAP S/4HANA United (for core financial operations, including bookkeeping, controlling, procurement, taxation and real estate processes), then also SPACE (network business) and EAM (asset management, including network construction and maintenance)
Outlook
Specific plans already exist for the future use of the tts performance suite. When E.ON updates to Windows 11, for instance, QuickAccess will help users set up the operating system independently. In addition, the company wants to further simplify content creation in the future by implementing the digital adoption solution’s Creator module. And to ensure key innovations don’t go unnoticed, E.ON will soon also be using role-based push notifications to tell employees about changes to processes, guidelines or learning content.
